Monday, April 29 - Bagnoregio with Sayoko & Enzo

Bagnoregio

A very old town located between Viterbo and Orvieto.

We were honored by another visit from Sayoko, and Enzo, her companion, who drove from Perugia (an 1 1/2 hour away) to spend the day with us.  Afterwards, we drove north another 1/2 hour in order to visit Bagnoregio.  It was a wonderful day together and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Enzo.  We met, once, 5 years ago in Perugia and we hope we will have many more opportunities to get together with them.

  No cars in this town!

Structures in earthquake prone areas were often built with wide, slanting bases.
You will see this again in Norcia, Tony's grandparents' home town.

Bagnoregio is a dying city.  Founded 2500 years ago by the Etruscans (whose tombs and lands you will see shortly), it was the birthplace of St. Bonaventure in the 1200's and is very isolated.  It reminds us of the castle at the top of the mountain in Cefalù.  No one could approach without being seen. In the late 1600's it was struck by a powerful earthquake which encouraged the departure of its residents.  Today, about 12 people live there year-round and 100 during the tourist season.
