Views from the train as we travel to Cefalù.
Cefalù lies about an hour east of Palermo on the coastline. The town dates to the 4th c BC. As the train travelled through the countryside we noticed huge mountains topped with snow. Who would have thought that hot, dry Sicily would have snow covered mountains.
Yes, that's snow in the mountains!
First glimpse of Cefalù reveals it nestled at the base of a huge crag topped by an old Norman fortress.
Old Norman fortress
We've come to see the Cathedral of Cefalù, built by Norman King Roger II in the 1150s. Like the Cathedral of Monreale, which we will see tomorrow, this cathedral is known for its fabulous colorful Byzantine mosaics of gold, brilliant blue, etc. All laid in a complex design of Christ the Pantocrator.
The elaborate embellishment reflects the Baroque influence. |
Cliff path to fortress. Fortunately there is an alternate route today!!
